Set 6 – CD 1: Sidney Bechet

Ezenkívül rendszeresen játszott klarinéton is. Az 1909-et követő esztendőkben olyan legendás zenészek együtteseiben klarinétozott, mint Buddy Petit, John Robichaux és Bunk Johnson. 1919-ben a Will Marion Cook zenekar tagjaként Európában turnézott. Londoni tartózkodása alatt kezdett foglalkozni a szopránszaxofonnal. Ő lett a nehéz hangszer első igazi mestere. Ernest Ansermet is felfigyelt játékára. Lemezfelvételeket készített többek között Louis Armstrong, Tommy Ladnier és Eddie Condon partnereként. 1938-ban szabóként dolgozott New Yorkban.

Washboard Rhythm Boys, Georgia Washboard Stompers from 1934 to 1935, Alabama Washboard Stompers 1930 to 1932) were a loose aggregation of jazz performers, many of high calibre, who recorded as a group for various labels between about 1930 and 1935. The band played goodtime swinging music, featuring spirited vocals, horns, a washboard player and occasionally kazoo, and were popular around the time of the Great Depression. They mostly covered current hits from other artists.

Milton Mesirow, better known as Mezz Mezzrow (1899-1972) was an American jazz clarinetist and saxophonist from Chicago, Illinois.[1] Mezzrow is well known for organizing and financing historic recording sessions with Tommy Ladnier and Sidney Bechet. Mezzrow also recorded a number of times with Bechet and briefly acted as manager for Louis Armstrong. He is equally well remembered, however, for being a colorful character, as clearly portrayed in his autobiography Really the Blues, as for his music. The book, which takes its title from a Bechet musical piece, was co-written by Bernard Wolfe and first published in 1946.

Set 6 – CD 4: Pee Wee Russell

Charles Ellsworth Russell, much better known by his nickname Pee Wee Russell (1906-1969), was a jazz musician. Early in his career he played clarinet and saxophones, but he eventually focused solely on clarinet. With a highly individualistic and spontaneous clarinet style that “defied classification”, Russell began his career playing Dixieland jazz, but throughout his career incorporated elements of newer developments such as swing, bebop and free jazz. In the words of Philip Larkin, “No one familiar with the characteristic excitement of his solos, their lurid, snuffling, asthmatic voicelessness, notes leant on till they split, and sudden passionate intensities, could deny the uniqueness of his contribution to jazz.”
