Karácsony táján mindig eszembe jut a tehetséges brit énekesnő, Kirsty MacColl (1959-2000).
Két dolog miatt is: a The Pogus együttessel készített Fairytale of New York az egyik kedvenc karácsonyi dalom; és rejtélyes, néhány nappal Karácsony előtt bekövetkezett halála okán.
Szegény Kirsty, bár tehetséges dalszerző, jó torkú énekes, és bűbájos jelenség volt, a szerencsével hadilábon állt.
David Byrne, a Talking Heads frontembere szerint Kirsty MacColl olyan volt, mint egy angyali hang Margaret Thatcher elfuserált Angliájában. Bono olyan dalszerzőkkel emlegette egy lapon, mint Ray Davies (The Kinks), Paul Weller (The Jam) és Morrissey (The Smiths).
Sikertelenségét a Pogues-frontember, Shane MacGowan sem értette, szerinte mindene megvolt ahhoz, hogy menő és felkapott énekesnő legyen: tehetséges, szenvedélyes és talpraesett volt, ráadásul jól is nézett ki.
Miért nem elképesztően sikeres?– fakadt ki egyszer.
Titokzatos halála azonban sokkal nagyobb érdeklődést keltett világszerte, mint hangja.
